RITES AND DEVOTION
"Look of an Atheist on devotion and christian rites"
This series of film photographies is an attempt for a deeply atheistic photographer to grasp the very essence of Christian faith.
A variety of festivals, processions and secular rites punctuate the life of practicing Christians, alone, within their families, their parishes or even secular brotherhoods.
But in these moments of communion and sharing of faith that gather the faithful, Greg Calvache's photographies seek to show the personal and inner relationship between each of them with Christian mysticism. With no seek for an explanation by the author, this mystery of an unconditional faith, deeply experienced and intensely lived, appears blatantly on the believers faces, through, but also beyond the rite.
The need for the photographer to maintain an ingenuous approach, even though he himself is fiercely atheist, is essential in order to show whithout any judgment. There is also a strong desire not to limit this work to pure documentary photography. By the use of sometimes pre-war equipment (a Contax III camera from 1938 for example) often harsh and complex to master, the artist completes his search for an intentionally timeless image, less "rigid" than current photographic standards.
