STORY...

Born in Lyon, France, in 1977, he moved to the province of Girona, Catalonia, in 1990, where he lived until 2000. During his early years in the north of the Iberian Peninsula, Greg gained an appreciation of a unique light and was exposed to diverse cultures. It was there that he met artists such as Ricard Jordà and Josep Malats, who were dear to his family. Time spent in their studios among works in progress, sculptures and paintings, made a lasting impression on the young Greg.

He then moved to Perpignan, in the Pyrénées-Orientales region, where he still lives. After studying language and sociology at university, he became increasingly involved in the local music scene, where he discovered working in a recording studio. It was in 2008 that he began to get to grips with photography, a medium for which he is absolutely passionate.

Music, sound, graphics, video or photography, Greg Calvache is a multi-disciplinary artist, an eternal jack-of-all-trades. Composition, balance, dynamics and harmony are concepts common to both the visual arts and music. This is what leads him to think differently, to conceptualise a photograph as a piece of music, or a print as a mix. He then tirelessly seeks to connect these interdisciplinary links to his work, with the desire to achieve an exalted expressivity.

This quest for a visual language that can convey his sensibility and his vision has led him to explore the history of photography, including certain processes dating back to the 19th century. Today, Greg uses mixed techniques, including silver, cyanotype, Van Dyke and Callytype prints, as well as pigmented charcoal prints on supports that he colours himself by hand, using mixtures of waxes and pigments. This is how he satisfies his need to be directly involved in creation, by manipulating the material, like a visual artist, at a time when photography uses mechanical means of reproduction. He wants to experience and feel the outcome of each image, from the moment it is taken to the moment it is printed, and to give each one the uniqueness he dreams of.

Greg Calvache is one of the Microprismes artists collective co-founder and is now represented in Japan by Gallery IND. Osaka. Director/curator 吉倉拓真 YOSHIKURA Takuma.
